Film Reviews: Uncool (2005) - By Duane L. Martin
Posted on Saturday, December 31, 2005 @ 23:15:00 Mountain Standard Time by Duane

Greg Behrendt has had quite a career going. A couple of his more notable achievements are that he was co-author of the book He's Just Not That Into You, and he was also a consultant on the hit show Sex in the City. And now here we have this two hour stand up comedy DVD called Uncool in which he talks about everything from playing air guitar to how he deals with his favorite holiday, Halloween. Unfortunately, instead of Uncool, this could have more appropriately been titled, Unfunny.

Now not to be mean here, because Greg actually does seem like a cool kinda guy that would be great to hang out with, but as a stand up comedian, his act needs work. It just wasn't funny. I think throughout the entire two hours, I laughed maybe twice and smiled a few times and that's about it. Is it because I don't have a sense of humor? Hardly. I absolutely love comedy and I've been into comedy for years and years, both stand up and cinematic, ever since I was a teenager. People like Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy, Andrew Dice Clay, Sam Kinison, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Billy Crystal, Cheech & Chong, Gallagher and many other greats who have made us laugh and done some brilliant stand up and sketch comedy work. Those guys are the legends of comedy. Unfortunately, Greg's level of comedy doesn't rise above small jokes and comments that you'd say to your buddies to get a smile out of them.

Again, this is nothing personal against Greg and it's just my personal opinion here, but I think it would do him a world of good to really immerse himself in the albums of the great comedians and study the things that made them the legends of our time. They're legends for a reason, and if he would take the lessons learned from their work and incorporate that into his own work, I think he does have the potential to be a really good comedian. As it is, his jokes and comments just fall flat and when it was over I felt like I had just wasted two hours of my time. And that's not even mentioning the fact that I couldn't look at him without thinking he looked like a skinnier version of Sammy Hagar, which isn't a bad thing since I like Sammy Hagar, but it kept gnawing at me all through the show.

The DVD is released by Warner Brothers and is available through all the normal outlets if you decide you actually want to sit through this thing.
