Naked City (1958 – 1963) – By Brian Morton

We’ve all heard the old line, ‘there are eight million stories in the naked city, this is just one.’ well, I finally know where it came from, and, better yet, I’ve seen the series that gave us that line! It’s Naked City and its classic cop drama at it’s finest…and you’re going to love this.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, ‘I just can’t watch old TV shows, they’re dated and horrible’, and, generally, I’d agree with you. And, when Naked City dropped into my inbox, I was less than excited, but once I started watching this show, it was hard to stop. It’s Law And Order: Old School! If you’re a fan of crime drama or the infamous procedurals, you’ll absolutely enjoy this!

And, there’s a pretty cool bonus…and it’s not a DVD extra, this series features some of the best actors of the past…and the present! In the very first episode, a very young Dustin Hoffman plays a major role! And, he’s not alone, there’s Dennis Hopper, William Shatner, Alan Alda, Telly Savalas and Rip Torn…all of whom were ‘up-and-comers’ when the show was filmed. And there’s too many more to mention here, and let’s not forget the actors who were big stars at the time, among them, George C. Scott, Mickey Rooney, Burgess Meredith and Walter Matthau, to name a few of them!

Naked City is a surprising delight; if you like cop shows…which I do…you’re going to love this. Is it a bit dated? Of course, everyone smokes, the slang is a bit strange, but you can get past all that, because the series is so well written that it still holds up today! I’m giving Naked City 3 out of 4 cigars, it’s not for everyone, but if you’re a fan of shows like Law And Order, Dragnet or any of the CSI’s, you’ll love this!
