Random (2015) – By Philip Smolen

Evin (Rusty James) and Nancy (Cindy Maples) are a happily married couple who are meant to be together. They know they share a special bond with one another and they realize that it’s a rare thing these days. So to celebrate, they go out to their favorite restaurant for an exceptional dinner, go out dancing, come home and make love. Everything is perfect – except for that one thing.

“Random” is the directorial debut of writer/producer/actress Cindy Maples. It’s a seven minute short that neatly plays with your expectations. The first few minutes covers familiar movie territory as Evin and Nancy recount their special night together. We see their evening in flashback and witness the passion they have for each other. However, in the last minute Maples pulls off a stunning shocker that literally takes your breath away. It’s a thrilling cinematic gut punch that will raise the hair on the back of your neck.

Rusty James and Cindy Maples are great together and have a wonderful onscreen chemistry (well, they are married!). DP Bonnell and Joe Atkinson’s cinematography adds the proper glossy feel and Mina Fedora’s music is elegant and touching. “Random” is a dazzling directorial debut for Cindy Maples that should be in high demand on the film festival circuit this year. Keep an eye out for it!
