Schizophreniac: The Whore Mangler (2003) – By Brian Morton

Some movies have given us a glimpse into the mind of madness, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Silence Of The Lambs and too many more to name here, but never have I seen a movie that not only glimpsed at madness, but fully embraced, even celebrated it, like Schizophreniac!

Schizophreniac is the tale of Harry Russo, a low budget film writer who is slightly unbalanced to begin with, but, after his girlfriend gives him a movie prop doll, named Rubberneck, Harry goes from slightly disturbed to full on mental case! The problem isn’t that Rubberneck is telling Harry to kill people, the problem is that Harry’s listening, and enjoying the work. The real joy (if I can use that word here) is the performance by John Giancaspro as Harry. Giancaspro uses his entire body in the performance, he jumps, and spasms and appears completely nude more times than I was comfortable with. Schizophreniac isn’t a movie for the faint hearted, the violence and language are bad enough, but this movie goes from insane to worse, when Harry vows his revenge on the news reporters who have uncovered his story, but also swears to begin killing children, which we see a glimpse of at the end of the movie!

Schizophreniac may be one of the most disturbing movies I’ve ever seen, and it’s definitely one that you can’t take your eyes off of. As strange as this may sound, I can’t wait to watch the sequel (which is in my hands even as we speak), to see where writer/director Ron Atkins goes next, after already finding the line and crossing it repeatedly and with great glee. To get disturbed by Schizophreniac for yourself, head over to Cut Throat Video right now and get a copy for yourself, but I’ll warn you, you may never look at that weird street person the same way again. So, until next time, when I’ll admit to my own mental illness…a true love of low budget horror…remember that the best movies are bad movies.
