Sharktopus (2010) – By Brian Morton

Last month, I got to sit down with Sharktopus and, despite my original thinking, I actually enjoyed it. Well, this month, I sat down with it again…this time on Blu-Ray and, you know what, it’s a movie that you can actually enjoy on a second viewing.

In case you can’t figure it out, Sharktopus is half-shark/half-octopus and all rage. It’s one of the SyFy movies that seem to run endlessly on the channel and can easily make you annoyed, after all, what sort of strange monster will it be this time? Well, if you’re in the mood, these are much better movies than you’d imagine. The acting is good, the story is…well, exactly what you’d expect it to be…and it makes for a movie that’s just over the top and great fun. The story is what you might expect, the sharktopus is a government experiment that goes wrong, the monster escapes and soon the beaches of some resort island are being terrorized by a giant shark with tentacles!

Now, ordinarily I’d bash the hell out of a movie whose monster changes size depending on what it’s doing in the scene, but in Sharktopus, it seems fitting. You see, everyone here is clearly in on the joke, everyone is so serious, so dour that they can’t possibly be taking this thing seriously…and that makes the movie wonderful. It’s like one of those cool old 50s movie where the monster is so unbelievable, but everyone reacts in abject terror, it somehow makes the movie great…and that’s what Sharktopus is…great.

I’m giving Sharktopus 4 out of 4 cigars, it’s the best half-shark/half-octopus movie I’ve ever seen! Get a copy for yourself by heading over to
