If you’ve ever attended a religious school, then you know that some of the most graphic stories in the world are the stories of Christian martyrs. No horror movie can hold a candle to some of the things that were really done to persecute Christians in the early days of the religion. Well, a new web series by filmmaker Peter O’Keefe, called Sister Mary Martha’s Martyrology tells these stories in a very unique way.
In episode one, we’re introduced to Sister Mary Martha, a nun with a special talent. When she tells the stories of the martyred saints, they actually appear to expound on the tale. In this first episode, Sister Mary Martha tells us the tale of Saint Alban, a man who wasn’t even a religious man, he was just killed in the place of one, who he let escape while being executed in his stead. In this fascinating tale, we meet Alban, St. Amphibalus (the priest who’s escape was paid for with Alban’s life), the man who was to execute Alban and the man who eventually killed Alban and the first executioner (who refused to kill a man of God).
The beauty of this series is that it tells the true story of the martyr, but in a way that has an X Files feels to it. We’re not really sure how Sister Mary Martha is bringing these people to life, but there they are, reliving the horrors of their final minutes and explaining why they did what they did. I’m sure that as the series progresses, we’ll learn more about Sister Mary Martha, about Father Timothy, who films Sister Mary Martha as she tells her tale. It’s a fascinating story and I can’t wait to see future episodes to find out where this goes. I’m giving Sister Mary Martha’s Martyrology four out of four cigars for a great start to what looks to be a very cool series. You can check it out for yourself by heading over to the Dead Saint’s.TV website. So, until next time, when I’ll be boning up on my Latin, remember that the best movies are bad movies.
