Smokey Bites the Dust is the third feature on Roger Corman’s Cult Classics Action Packed triple feature release. It’s the story of a small down deliquent (Jimmy McNichol) who likes to steal cars and lead the cops on high speed chases. The prom is coming up at his high school, so he decides it’s time to do something really crazy. He gets the sheriff’s daughter to come along with him on one hell of a wild ride across two states, with the sheriff right on his heels the whole way.
I’m not going to spend a whole lot of time on this film, though I’d hazard a guess to say that I’ll be spending more time on it than Max Apple and Brian Williams did when they wrote it.
This film is basically just one big chase with no characters to really care about. Oh sure there are little bits of story mixed in here and there, but as you watch it, you probably won’t even notice them, and when it’s over, you likely won’t remember any of it. Yes, it’s that pointless and forgettable. The only saving grace of this film, if there is one, are the few amusing scenes sprinkled in here and there, usually relating to the football player that has a crush on the sheriff’s daughter. Aside from that, there really isn’t all that much to it. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that after you watch this one once, it’ll never see the inside of your DVD player again.
Fortunately, this film was included on a triple feature release with Georgia Peaches, which isn’t that bad, and The Great Texas Dynamite Chase, which is a great film. When you buy this release from Shout Factory, and you’ll definitely want to, it won’t be for this film. It’ll be for the other two. If this film had been released on its own, I doubt they’d have sold many. Included as filler in a triple feature release though, it works out far better.
You may not want to watch this film more than once, but you’ll definitely be watching the others more than once, and the other two films alone are worth adding this release to your collection. You can order it from Shout Factory here for a very reasonable price.
