Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2009) – By Brian Morton

Ordinarily, I don’t really review TV shows, but when one is as good as this, and then I can’t help myself! Originally appearing on the Starz Channel, Spartacus: Blood and Sand sounded a bit like more of the same at first, but I gave it a chance, and I was more than happily surprised…and you will be too!

Blood and Sand follows the original tale of Spartacus, and, according to producers, takes the historic tale of the Roman slave who led an uprising, uses a bit of artistic license, and makes a wonderful story. The tale begins with Spartacus, who’s a soldier fighting alongside the Roman army, but when the Roman’s betray him, he finds himself enslaved and his wife sent away. His only goal in life is to escape and rejoin his wife…yes, Spartacus: Blood and Sand is a love story at its core, but don’t let that worry you too much. Our hero finds himself being trained to be a gladiator and soon is in the arena! I won’t tell you the entire story, but there’s something here for everyone. There’s action, romance, intrigue and plenty of blood is spilled, all leading to an ending that will have you cheering on the good guys!

As for extras, this package has plenty to interest you, from behind the scenes of the training of the gladiators, to chatting with the producers about the actual history of Spartacus and where reality and art part company, through special effects pieces. Overall, if you’ve seen Spartacus: Blood and Sand, this is a great way to re-see this cool series, and if you haven’t then this is a ‘must see’ action series! I’m giving Spartacus: Blood and Sand 4 out of 4 cigars, it’s unpredictable and amazing, and I can’t wait for more from Starz and Anchor Bay! You can get a copy for yourself by heading over to
