The Depression of Detective Downs & The Depression of Detective Downs 2: On Depression’s Edge (2011) – By Brian Morton

Police procedurals are a pretty tough nut to crack for an indie production. But it seems that ALT Key Productions managed to take a tried and true genre and, not only do it in a different style, but manage to breathe a little fresh air into the genre as well! It’s called The Depression of Detective Downs and it and its sequel are pretty good little shorts.

Detective Downs is your run of the mill cop, he’s not out to be a hero, he’s just a guy doing his job and trying to get by. He’s got credit card debt; his girlfriend just left him and his partner is in the hospital…it’s really no wonder that Downs is depressed. The real difference here is that writer/director/animator Anthony Thurman does The Depression of Detective Downs as animated shorts, so there’s no issue with production values looking cheap. And, while even I was a bit skeptical about a serious animated cop short, The Depression of Detective Downs is very good, you forget quickly about the animation as you get drawn into the story.

I’m giving The Depression of Detective Downs 2 out of 4 cigars, and I’m giving The Depression of Detective Downs 2: On Depression’s Edge 3 and a half out of 4 cigars, they’re both good, but you can definitely see how Thurman is progressing in his style, in both animation and writing. I’m hoping to see more of Detective Downs to see…well, to see how he’s feeling! You can check out the first short for yourself by clicking over to http://www.altkeyproductions.com.
