The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009) – By Brian Morton

The British have a long history of ‘caper’ movies. Movies about criminals, and they’re usually pretty good. Well, a new movie from writer/director J Blakeson takes the genre and keeps it rolling! It’s called The Disappearance of Alice Creed and it’s one of the best crime movies I’ve seen in years. Here’s the story:

Vic and Danny have a plan, to kidnap someone, hold them hostage for money and then skip the country as rich men. They’ve turned their apartment into a prison and now they’ve got a hostage. Their plan seems to be going along just fine…but, like every evil scheme, there’s always a problem. The problems here are many and varied…I could explain in more detail, but that would ruin this truly edge of your seat criminal drama.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed only has three cast members, our kidnappers and the hostage, but it feels so much bigger than that. With twists and turns in every direction, The Disappearance of Alice Creed will keep you guessing from start to finish. J Blakeson is now two for two in my book, he also wrote The Descent Part 2…which is another amazing movie, so I’m very anxious to see more of his work and to keep my eye on him to see what’s next. I’m giving The Disappearance of Alice Creed 4 out of 4 cigars, it’s a great story with a great cast and it’s one of those rare crime dramas that doesn’t need a huge cast to keep your fingernails firmly in your teeth throughout!
