The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964) – By Jason S. Lockard

When you are going to make a film. The filmmaker must believe in the story that he is going to bring to the screen. Well, when Pier Paolo Pasolini made this film about the life of Jesus, I can’t imagine a more unlikely candidate. Pasolini was gay, a Marxist and a devout atheist. Yet he made a film that still stands up in 2015.

The film follows the Gospel closely. It is divided into three parts the Messiah’s birth, His Ministry and than ultimate death and resurrection. The film was made with real people playing the parts of these biblical characters and thus leant more realism to the film.

The Legend Films DVD release includes the original unedited over 2 hour black and white restored film, but it also includes the new 90 minute colorized version as well. Bonus features include; Pier Paolo Pasolini biography and fimography. This is a really nice release for biblical film fans.
