The Tragic Meltdown of Pussy Ralph (2014) By Brian Morton

When I saw this title in my inbox, I wasn’t sure what exactly I was getting myself in for. Then, when the character of Pussy Ralph is introduced, I was sure this was some kind of bad ass fighting movie. Then, Ralph plays chess! That’s right; it’s a bad ass chess playing short!

Pussy Ralph is a champion chess player, and he doesn’t like to lose. But, when he comes up against a player who’s got his number, Ralph has a major league meltdown and is never the same again.

The humor here is probably from this giant, aggressive guy, who’s a chess champion, but they one note joke went on a bit longer than I thought it should have.

Being a student film, I’m not going to judge it as harshly as a movie that might have been handed to me by a filmmaker who was trying to make a name or some money with it. The Tragic Meltdown of Pussy Ralph is an interesting student film, and one that clearly has potential. It’s clear that it’s the filmmakers first (or at least one of the first) attempt as making a movie, and this is a great start. I just felt that, as a movie alone, it needed some fleshing out. The idea of a giant, aggressive chess player is a good one, but I thought there should be a bit more story to explain why he was this way.

Anyway, I’m giving The Tragic Meltdown of Pussy Ralph 3 out of 4 cigars; it’s a good joke, just told too long. You can check it out for yourself by heading over to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1InwKATz1M.
