Last year, a little comic book became a phenomenon. No, nothing that Marvel handed us, I’m talking about The Walking Dead, the little indie comic that has become one of the best shows on TV. Now, I’ve had endless debates with other horror fans about The Walking Dead being just a ‘soap opera with zombies’, and that might be partially true, but if that’s all you see, then you need to take another look, and it’s the best time to take that second look, because Season Two just hit DVD and Blu-Ray!
Picking up right where season one left off, we follow Rick and the survivors to Hershel’s farm…a plot line that was very popular in the comic book. We start on the road and, through some unusual turns, the group comes to the farm, damaged and looking for a respite, but not before losing a child in the melee with a herd of zombies. The search takes several episodes and allows some relationships to build while stressing others to the point of breaking. It all leads to a final episode that will have you turning your TV on AMC and leaving it there until the October 14th, season three premiere!
One of the best things about The Walking Dead is the conversations that it illicits. What do you think you’d do in a similar situation? It’s really not a show about zombies; it’s a show about the human condition when stressed to the breaking point by the zombie apocalypse. It’s, without a doubt, one of the best written and executed shows on TV right now, and if you’re not watching it, then you’re really missing something! And, if you’re a horror fan, get over yourself and realize that there’s much more to the zombie genre than just dead people ripping flesh and blood spray…and The Walking Dead proves that!
I’m giving The Walking Dead Season Two 4 out of 4 cigars, it’s a great season filled with great stories that will have you laughing, crying and on the edge of your seat throughout!
