Triple Threat Kaiju Profile: Destoroyah, Gabara and Spacegodzilla – By Jordan Ga

Destoroyah

Height: 120 meters (394 feet)
Mass: 80,000 metric tons (88,000 tons)
Weapons/Ablities: Explosive micro-oxygen spray, laser horn, flight, pincers & claws, and the ability to divide into multiple creatures.
First Appearance: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
Destoroyah’s Complete Filmography: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla Fantasy
Origin: The effects of the Oxygen Destroyer (which killed the first Godzilla in 1954) revived a Pre-Cambrian life form and mutated it into this metamorphosing beast!

While Godzilla has faced several other foes that could change forms or continued to evolve at an alarming pace, Destoroyah (a.k.a. Destroyer, a.k.a. Destroyah) stands apart from the rest. This monstrous crustacean’s evolution was sped up by the only weapon that ever managed to successfully kill and destroy the King of the Monsters, the Oxygen Destroyer. Destoroyah’s first (and truly only) appearance was in 1995’s “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.” Not only did the film include this new kaiju for Godzilla to fight, but it also had one of the most unique Godzilla suits in the entire series. Godzilla is suffering from an internal nuclear meltdown (that’s one major case of heartburn!) and his body is glowing bright red during the entire film. The only thing that can possibly destroy Godzilla is the new menace, Destoroyah.

The massive insect-like monster manages to kill Godzilla Junior by injecting “micro-oxygen” into its bloodstream. This leads to an all out brawl between the gigantic uber-monsters in which both die. Destoroyah attempts to flee from the battle, only to be frozen solid by the Super X-3. Destoroyah crashes to the Earth and explodes, never to see another starring role again. Moments after Destoroyah’s defeat, Godzilla is blasted with freezer cannons as he melts down. This saves the Earth but now the planet’s most popular cultural icon is (temporarily) dead. Since then, Destoroyah has appeared in “Godzilla Fantasy,” an amalgam of clips and footage from the Heisei series of Godzilla films with the series’ musical score playing in the background. Currently you can play as Destoroyah in “Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee” and it may even be a playable kaiju in the “Godzilla: Save the Earth” game, which is due out later this year.

Gabara

Height: 58 meters (190 feet)
Mass: 23,000 metric tons (25,300 tons)
Weapons/Abilities: Can generate electricity through it’s arms and through the horn on it’s head.
First Appearance: Godzilla’s Revenge
Gabara’s Complete Filmography: Godzilla’s Revenge
Origin: Gabara is the figment of a young child’s imagination.

Gabara is most likely the most reviled kaiju in the Godzilla universe. This warbling, cat-faced ogre exists only in the daydreams of a young Japanese boy. In his only film appearance in “Godzilla’s Revenge,” Gabara consistently attacks and bullies Minya (a.k.a. Minilla), Godzilla’s dough boy-ish offspring. It’s not until Godzilla teaches Minya to fight back that he finally makes a stand against Gabara. Minya is naturally outclassed and gets a few hundred-thousand volts of electricity for his efforts. Finally, having had enough of Gabara and the spliced footage contained in “Godzilla’s Revenge,” Godzilla arrives on the scene and gives the strange creature a sound thrashing. This of course teaches the aforementioned Japanese boy a valuable lesson and allows him to conquer his real-life bully. Is it any wonder why Gabara hasn’t been seen in a kaiju film since this one?

Spacegodzilla

Height: 120 meters (394 feet)
Mass: 80,000 metric tons (88,000 tons)
Weapons/Abilities: Corona beam from mouth, flight in space, gravity tornado, and has the ability to launch rocket-like crystals at his foes.
First Appearance: Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla
Spacegodzilla’s Complete Filmography: Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla, Godzilla Fantasy
Origin: Due to either Mothra’s or Biollante’s presence in outer space, some of Godzilla’s cells were sucked through a black hole and melded with a crystalline alien life form.

Out of all the Heisei series’ Godzilla villains, I think Spacegodzilla is one of the most overlooked. It’s a rather fearsome looking creature who seems to gain new powers every ten minutes. (You think I’m kidding about that but wait until you see the final battle!) This kaiju hybrid arrives on Earth after a brief battle with Japan’s newest robotic creation, M.O.G.U.E.R.A. Spacegodzilla makes short work of the giant robot and soon sets about in its evil quest to kill Godzilla. Spacegodzilla soon conquers Tokyo and grows a vast forest of crystal structures from which it gains its power. With the combined might of Godzilla and M.O.G.U.E.R.A., Spacegodzilla is incinerated and only seen again in “Godzilla Fantasy.” Again, the footage contained in “Godzilla Fantasy” is only borrowed clips from a variety of Heisei Godzilla films. One has to wonder though… maybe, just maybe Spacegodzilla will be a playable character in “Godzilla: Save the Earth.” If so, that would definitely make the game a must buy in my opinion!
